Also called substantive editing. Clarifying and\/or reorganizing a manuscript for content and structure.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Proofreading<\/h4>

Reading and correcting page proofs of an edited manuscript. This is not to be confused with copy editing (see above), which takes place before the manuscript has been formatted into page proofs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Rewriting & Ghost Writing<\/h4>

<\/div><\/button>

Creating a new manuscript or parts of a manuscript on the basis of content and research supplied by an author. May include some research and writing of original material.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Manuscript Assessment<\/h4>

<\/div><\/button>

Reading an entire manuscript, then providing the author with a detailed report assessing strengths and weaknesses, and making recommendations for how the author can improve the manuscript.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Copyright Research & Permissions Licensing<\/h4>

<\/div><\/button>

Researching permissions needed to reproduce previously published material; obtaining the permission of rights holders; negotiating licensing terms and fees; inserting permissions information into the manuscript.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Picture\/Image Research<\/h4>

Locating suitable photos and\/or artwork; preparing descriptions for illustrations, maps and diagrams; negotiating licensing with picture sources and artists; preparing labels, captions, and source identification lists.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fact and Reference Checking<\/h4>

Checking the accuracy of facts and\/or quotes by reference to original sources or verified secondary sources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Coordinating and editing a project from proposal or rough manuscript to final manuscript, incorporating input from authors, consultants and reviewers. May include budgeting, hiring, design supervision, and project coordination.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Producing an alphabetical list of subjects, concepts, names, places, etc., that appear in a work. This is not done using the \u201cindex\u201d function of a word processing program.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
